What is a Natal Chart? A Guide to Your Astrology Birth Chart
Your natal chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. It's the foundation of modern astrology — and the foundation of every profile on Pluto.
The three signs that matter most
A full astrology birth chart maps every planet in the sky at your birth, but three placements do most of the heavy lifting: Sun, Moon, and Rising. Together they are often called your "big three."
Sun ☀️
Your core identity — the energy you bring into the world. Most people know their sun sign as their 'zodiac sign'.
Moon 🌙
Your inner emotional world — how you feel, soothe, and process. Calculated from the moon's position at your birth.
Rising ⬆️
The mask you wear — how strangers first experience you. Determined by the sign on the eastern horizon at your birth time.
Planets, houses, and aspects
Beyond the big three, every planet (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) sits in a sign and a "house" — a slice of the sky representing an area of life like career, relationships, or family. Aspects are the angles between planets. A "trine" feels easy; a "square" feels like friction.
You don't need to memorize all of it. Start with the big three, then add one planet at a time as you get curious.
What you need to generate your chart
- Your birth date
- Your birth time (as exact as possible — the rising changes every two hours)
- Your birth city
No birth time? You can still get a meaningful sun and moon reading. Rising will stay a mystery until you find it.
How Pluto uses your natal chart
Pluto is a cosmic social network organized by zodiac sign. When you add your birth details, we calculate your full natal chart and use it to:
- Group you with people who share your sun, moon, or rising
- Surface a daily horoscope tuned to your chart, not just your sun sign
- Show synastry — the compatibility between two charts — when you meet someone new
- Power the Cosmic Advisor, an AI that reads your chart and answers questions in plain language
